the way over the top 5 star reviews
and Micah's 1 star beat down.
1) The Bertha>Greatest is hot out of the gate
West L.A., C.C. Rider -average
The first call to Take a Step Back is laced by Healy.
Ramble on Rose-nice version
Weir does some good backing vocals.
Bob has a North East Fall Tour sore throat.
Second call to Take a Step Back!
Way more in earnest this time.
Fire Marshal is Not a word you just toss around.
Esau-Again I just really dig this tune.
A good reflective tune perfect to diffuse herd mentality.
And if Esau don't get it how about a Bird Song
to help bring that mellow vibe.
Jack Straw-Perhaps the ultimate Set One closer!
2) Shakedown- Jerry needs a teleprompter but the jam is smooth enough SHAKEDOWN > SAMSON
Did this combo a few times/ loved the intensity of it.
He's Gone- lyrics at better pace for Jer.
He's Gone>Smokestack Lightning- this show becomes much more soulful mid-2nd set/ Jam is pretty sweet.
Decent Drumz>Space >Wheel>Other One.
>Black Peter- Classic, pretty laid back! (Brent has some cool organ work in laid.)
Lovelight! a little bit more drawn out then usual
E) Revolution- Got one at Nassau and I thought it was a super cool tune. A great song for the encore slot.
Makes you actual stay with the band instead of one footing it out the door for Shakedown time.
Decent show a bit uneven at times. I guess i would rate it somewhere between 3 or 4 for this time period.
Subject: jack STRAW -johnyroastbeef
While this is not the best all around Jack straws(see 79) the guitar break-jam before the final verse is what its all about and this one is ripping and goes on and on,bar after bar which is why it times out as one of the longest AND best versions.
After Jack I couldnt take the crush anymore and went ALL the way back to the rear of the dome as far from the stage as possible
1983 and 84 Jerry's 'issues' with the persian decended until the summer and especially fall of 84 when there was no hiding something bad was going on and not just the pers. His weight gain, long, greasy hair. To be frank his hygeine. The shows of this period are 'dynamic' in that the highs are high but the lows are low. Shows were very uneven and Garcia rarely if EVER got thru a complete show tune g the lyrics correct on every tune. But as I said the highs were high and this JACK STRAW is one of those highs.
I spoke to him years later about this period and he was basically going through opiod depression. Cared about little but staying high and 'numb.' As Jerry admitted its the ultimate comfort drug and William Burroughs commented that as long as you have your dope your 'happy' lying down and staring at your shoes all day
Subject: Jerry killed it
Bobby had a bit too much to drink ..but JERRY KILLED it also ..amazing show and a great time ...I remember Jerry smiling in some trippy green light while rippin up a solo ....ahhhh ...good times ..
Subject: What a terrible show
Subject: "used to play for silver, now we play for life"
I've been to my fair share of shows, listened to thousands more and that's the cleanest, white hot, best jack straw EVER,EVER played. Jer's licks are indescribable,
but the whole band played it and it leaves me speechless. All i can do is play it again, shake my head, play it again, and again and again......
